Energy efficiency labelling requirements

To comply with regulations and help your buyers make energy-efficient purchases, you must display the information below in your listings:

  • Energy efficiency class (EC range)
  • Energy efficiency rating
  • Energy efficiency label
  • Product information sheet

Energy and tyre labels contain useful information about a product’s energy consumption and performance, which can help guide your buyer’s purchasing decision.

Here are a few examples of energy efficiency labels for different types of products

Smartphones and tablets

  1. Scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G.
  2. The energy efficiency class of this product.
  3. The battery endurance per cycle, in hours and minutes per full battery charge.
  4. Repeated free fall reliability class.
  5. Battery endurance in cycles.
  6. Repairability class.
  7. Ingress Protection (enclosure against dust and liquids) rating.

Energy efficiency labelling requirements for smartphones and tablets apply to offers in the EU and/or Northern Ireland only.

The following types of smartphones and tablets are in scope:

  • New items of any model that were first released on or after 20 June 2025
  • New items of any model that were first released before 20 June, but only for items that were placed in the EU and/or Northern Ireland market after 20 June. An item is defined as “placed in the EU and/or Northern Ireland market” when it’s first commercially made available for distribution or use in the EU and/or Northern Ireland
  • Used items imported after 20 June from outside the EU and/or Northern Ireland, regardless of the model’s first release date

Refrigerators and freezers

  1. Scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G.
  2. The energy efficiency class of this product.
  3. Annual energy consumption in kWh.
  4. The sum of the volumes of the frozen compartment(s) in litres.
  5. The sum of the volumes of the chill compartment(s) and unfrozen compartment(s) in litres.
  6. Airborne acoustical noise emissions and class. In this case this is a B class.

Light sources

  1. Scale of energy efficiency classes from A to G.
  2. The energy efficiency class of this product.
  3. Energy Consumption of the light source in on-mode, expressed in kWh of electricity consumption per 1 000 hours.
  4. QR Code.
  5. The number of this Regulation that is ‘2019/2015’.

Tyres

  1. Rolling Resistance Class (A to E).
  2. Wet Grip Class (A to E).
  3. External Rolling Noise Level.
  4. External Rolling Noise Class (A to C).
  5. Tyre for severe snow conditions.
  6. Tyre for severe ice conditions.

Easily add energy efficiency documentation to your listings

You have a few options to add required energy efficiency and performance information to your listings.

1

Upload energy efficiency details yourself

You can upload energy efficiency documentation directly to your listings. This option gives you more control over what’s shown to buyers.

When creating or revising a listing:

  • Upload the energy label and product information sheet as image files in the item disclosures section
  • For electrical items, include the energy efficiency rating and EC range in the item specifics.
2

Add your product’s EPREL registration number

If you find it difficult to upload energy efficiency information directly, you can add your product’s EPREL registration number to your listing. This unique code identifies your product model in the EPREL database. We’ll retrieve the official data, if available, and display it on your listing.

This feature is optional. If you already include the full set of required details using the upload method, we recommend that you continue doing so. It remains the most reliable way to stay compliant. If you’ve uploaded partial details before adding an EPREL number, we’ll use information from the database to fill in any missing details, but not replace existing information.

3

Staying compliant with third-party listing tools

If you use a third-party listing tool, check with your provider on how to add energy efficiency and performance details to your listings.

Please note that it’s your responsibility to verify that the information is visible in your listings and accurate. If the information is missing or inaccurate, you should upload the required documentation using eBay’s energy labelling feature. For step-by-step guidance, visit our page on adding energy efficiency documentation to your listings.

FAQs

  • What is the EPREL registration number?

The European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) is the EU’s official database for products that need energy labelling information. Each registered item receives a unique code that identifies the product model in the EPREL database.

  • How do I find the EPREL registration number for my product?

You can usually find your product’s EPREL registration number in one of the following places:

    • On the product information sheet
    • By scanning the QR code on the energy label or EU tyre label (if available). The registration number appears at the end of the page URL (for example: https://…/1234567) or in the downloadable product information sheet.
  • What if my product is not in the EPREL database?

If you sell electrical products (such as appliances, light sources, smartphones or tablets) or tyres, check with your supplier or manufacturer to confirm whether they’ve registered the product in EPREL. If your product isn’t listed, they’ll need to register and publish the product information in EPREL before providing you with the valid number.

  • I added my EPREL Registration Number to my listing. Why don’t I see any energy labelling information on the listing page?

For newly registered EPREL products, energy labeling data may take up to one week to appear on the listing after it’s retrieved using the EPREL Registration Number. Additionally, check with your supplier or manufacturer, as they are required to register and publish the product details in the EPREL database if needed.

  • I haven’t submitted any efficiency information or an EPREL number. Why is some of my product’s efficiency information already populated?

Even if you haven’t provided an EPREL registration number or uploaded energy efficiency details, some information may appear on your listing when it can be sourced from product identifiers. This information is limited and depends on availability. You’re still responsible for making sure the information on your products is complete and accurate.

  • Where can I find energy efficiency documentation?

You can find the energy efficiency labels, product information sheets, and EU tyre label for your products in several ways:

    • Visit the manufacturer's website
    • Search for the product on the EPREL - European Product Registry for Energy Labelling page
    • Ask your supplier
    • Scan the QR code of the energy efficiency label (if applicable) that's printed on the product, packaging, or documentation. It will direct you to the EPREL site, where you can find the product information sheet.
  • What format should the energy efficiency label and product information sheet be in?

The images can be in JPEG (.jpg), BMP (.bmp), GIF (.gif), TIF (.tiff), or PNG (.png) format and should be more than 500 pixels on the longest side. If the energy label and product information sheet are in PDF format, you'll need to convert them using a PDF converter tool.

  • Why isn’t the energy efficiency documentation showing up in my listings after I’ve added the brand, MPN, and/or EAN in the item specifics?

This happens if the third-party provider doesn’t have the necessary information in their database. In this case, you need to add this information to your listings using eBay’s functionality to stay compliant.

  • What types of tyres require energy efficiency labelling?

Energy efficiency labelling is applicable to tyres with classifications C1, C2, and C3. To find out if the tyres you’re selling require energy efficiency labelling, visit the EU’s energy efficient products page for tyres.

  • Can I show different energy consumption information for listings with variants, sets, or bundles of products?

Currently, each listing can display only one energy arrow, one energy label, and one product data sheet, even if the listing includes variants, sets, or bundles of products. Selecting a specific variant won’t update the displayed energy information. To show different energy efficiency details for different products, you’ll need to create separate listings.

  • What happens if I don’t add energy efficiency labelling to my listings?

You’re legally required to comply by adding energy efficiency documentation to your listings. Having non compliant listings may result in fines and your listings not being visible to buyers.

  • What does it mean when an energy label is “rescaled”?

Rescaling is the process of revising energy efficiency labels for certain product categories to reflect a simplified rating system. New rating scales are designed to make labels easier to understand, ensure consistency across product types, and accommodate future technological advancements. For example, tumble dryers have recently been rescaled, moving from the previous A+++ to D scale to a new A–G format.
It's important to stay informed about the current energy labelling scale for any products you sell, as all energy labelling documentation must reflect the most up-to-date classification. You can check the current energy labelling classification for your product type on the European Commission’s website.
