Create great listings

Get the attention of potential buyers actively searching for items you’re selling with these listing tips.

Listing is where it all begins

Think of your listing as a digital window display - every detail matters. From the title to the photos can influence your buyer's decision to view and purchase what you’re selling. Step into your buyer’s shoes and ask yourself what would attract you to an item.

Create a listing in 5 steps

  1. Write a title that pops
  2. Use eye-catching photos and video
  3. Add item specifics that inform your buyer
  4. Use a detailed description that excites potential buyers
  5. Price the item competitively

Tip: Listing in bulk? Create a listing template available on Seller Hub to simplify your listing and have templates ready to use for what you sell.

Two ways to set up your listings

Auctions

Buyers can compete for your item by bidding. You can use this for rare, limited edition, or high-profile, high-demand items.

Buy It Now

Set a fixed price so buyers can buy your item immediately. This is ideal for multiple items or when offering variations like size.

Write a listing title that stands out

When a buyer searches for an item, eBay’s system finds the listing titles that closely match.

You’ve got 80 characters to use, so use as many as you can in your title. Include the brand, model or type, colour, style, and even the model number. Avoid using special characters or irrelevant words. Here are some great examples.

  • Ann Taylor Women’s Sweater 100% Cotton Black Yellow Sleeves Size 6
  • Nike Boys Blue Lace-Up Sneakers Size 3 AB0011-234

Tip: Save time with our AI tool to help you write your listing descriptions. The AI-powered tool suggests an attention-grabbing item description at the touch of a button. You can use the suggested description or customise it to add more detail, adjust for accuracy, or fit your business’ unique voice.

Build trust with buyers by adding the item’s condition

Buyers like to know what they're getting, so be accurate and transparent about your item’s condition. By describing your item accurately, you can help customers understand what they're buying, which can reduce the chance of a return.

Photos and videos can make the sale

The more photos you add of your item, highlighting all angles and any imperfections, the more confident buyers will feel about what they’re getting.

Tip: Make your photos stand out with automatic background removal or create studio quality images using AI-generated background images feature available on the eBay mobile app.

Details make the listing

The more information you include, the more likely your item will show up in relevant searches - and appeal to buyers. Accurate, thorough details can help increase your chances of making the sale.

A great product description can be a game changer

Write a description of your item that can help buyers decide to make a purchase. Include information about the item's brand name, style, and model numbers, along with any unique qualities.

Price your items competitively

Set a price that’s fair for you and attracts a buyer’s attention. Here are some tips you can use to price your items.

Research the right price

Buyers love free delivery

Conducting research on price strategy and setting a competitive price is a key factor in attracting buyers. Here are some things to try:

  • Use our Product Research tool in Seller Hub or in the eBay app to see how similar items are priced.
  • Try the camera icon in the eBay app to capture your item and instantly find matching listings with current prices.
  • Run a web search to see how your item is priced on other sites.

It’s true that buyers prefer free delivery but this may not be possible for certain items, so choose what's right for your business.

  • Consider which listings are less impacted by offering free delivery.
  • Use Seller Hub Discounts, such as Multi-Buy or Offer to Buyers, to send more than one item in the same shipment.
