The Petty Collector's Dream!
Playback is a truly outstanding display of a genius at work - the testament of a legendary legacy of songwriting, singing and musical craftsmanship. Not only do you get most of Petty's greatest hits across three discs (up to Echo), but the latter three are full with outtakes, B-sides, hidden gems, overlooked snippets from the cutting room floor, ancient recordings (from mid-70s Mudcrutch era) and live anthems. It's so utterly fascinating to see what could have been, what albums could have looked and sounded totally different - like '87's Let Me Up..., for instance. And all of this bound in a box with real thought and care put into it, with the CDs having their own little gatefold sleeves. This is definitely something for the collectors, but would equally make a great springboard for a newbie to the world of Petty, who really wants to explore every nook and cranny. A lot of stuff on this 6CD box set is still not available anywhere else, and probably never will be. Definitely worth the purchase.
