Picks
Needed to try differing sizes of picks, the Dunlop Ultex are good for me.

Skimming with a squeegee
Used the squeegee with some very watered down plaster, like a consistency of toothpaste and got with the squeegee some excellent results. As with everything a little practise helped, Rolled on the plaster with a paint roller and leveled off with the Sqeegee gave a good result.
Skim with both the squeegee and the trowel, both work, just your own choice really .
Remember though, if you are starting out, small area first and allow yourself to learn, plasterers may be better but they have had years of practice, skimming really is not hard.
