Nick Fury- JUST GETTING STARTED
This is the first volume of Nick Shield, produced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and as such it shows as they were finding their feet with this series. Kirby's early work is as good as anything he usually produced and there are a couple of issues (141 and 142) reproduced that include some very fine inking by Frank Giacoia and Mike Esposito that rivals his best Mike Royer inked work. Excellent issues to have if you are a Kirby fan. Sadly, this is matched by some very sub-standard art work by Howard Purcell and run-of-the -mill art by Severin and Don Heck. That means it ends up as a mixed bag. However, the fact that it includes Jim Steranko's earliest Marvel work makes it a great volume to possess, showing how he very quickly developed hos own style after inking over Kirby's pencils.
By today's standards the writing by Lee, Roy Thomas and Denny O'Neil is simplistic and unsophisticated but this was a different time and the world was a simpler place, along with the comic books. Possibly, the greatest testament to this early work is how much of it has seeped into the Marvel cinematic universe, proving its longevity and value for a whole new generation.

Prelude to Infinity- essential reading
If like me, you read "Infinity" first this book will help you better understand the context in which it occurs. However, after ordering it I discovered that much of this is actually contained in the large hardback volume . That said it is helpful and an entertaining read, although it does feel like a bit of a filler between the first two volumes of Avengers World and Infinity.

Probably the best animated series every made
This is the first of the Batman: The Animated Series and is undoubtedly the best, being the closest depiction of the Batman we know from the DC comics. It's dark, moving and beautifully crafted and picks up on many of the storylines from the comics of the 70s. Every character is portrayed fully and there are storylines here that are both dramatic and touching. Never has there been a better animated series providing entertainment for both adults and children alike. I was a fan of this in 1992, when my children introduced me to it, one Saturday morning, and I remain transfixed by it. Even my wife, who has little time for comics or cartoons, loves it - you can't say fairer than that.
