Book of Tea Invokes Incredible Sense of Peace
A wonderful book -- I felt such a sense of utter peace while reading it, and for some time afterwards. This book, by Japanese Kakizo Okakura, is very easy to read, almost leaving one with the impression that he or she could learn how to do a Tea Ceremony quite easily! (He does let the reader know that this apparently simple ceremony is more complex than meets the eye.) Mr Okakura describes the history of the Tea Ceremony, a typical tea-house, and an actual Tea Ceremony. As previously stated, I felt such a sense of peace after reading this book -- it was marvellous. Just imagine how one would feel after being a guest at a Tea Ceremony!

Wonderful Recording of Bach Christmas Oratorio
This is a beautiful recording of the JS Bach Christmas Oratorio, by John Elliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists. Their overall sound, of course, is wonderful, and they sing the work (actually six oratorios for the Christmas Season) with a great deal of feeling. I love this work and am glad I finally bought a copy. It will make this Christmas a very special one!

Interesting but Average Biography of Mary Queen of Scots
This biography of Mary Queen of Scots is quite interesting; however, I most liked the pictures. The pictures are wonderful; especially nice is that one very popular portrait of Queen Mary (in the National Portrait Gallery, London) has finally been cleaned of four and one-half centures of varnish and grime, revealing the Queen's colouring as fresh and radiant as contemporary descriptions indicate, rather than horribly jaundiced. Regarding the written information, Professor Doran, disappoingingly, relies heavily on those biographers of Queen Mary's who describe her as being more or less average in intelligence, inept as a ruler, ineffective in hunting down the murderers of her second husband, Lord Darnley, and really not worth too much bother once imprisoned in England. I don't feel that Professor Doran really did enough research into Mary's French childhood to see that even if the Queen wasn't as brilliant as her counsin Elizabeth I, she was still very bright. Nor was she an inept ruler: she was certainly handicapped by a treacherous nobility (with religious differences playing a substantial part), led by her half-brother, the first Earl of Moray, who was often hand-in-glove with Elizabeth I in plots against his sister. As for prosecuting Darnley's murderers, the unfortunate Queen was surrounded by traitors; most of her nobles (some of the most self-seeking ever in Scotland) were involved in the plot, or had some knowledge of it, and so it was in the best interests of most of them for it not to be resolved. As for Mary's English imprisonment, it was in no way an honourable retirement; it was totally unjust, and movitated by envy on the part of Elizabeth I (the two cousins never met) and suspicion and religious prejudice on the part of the latter Queen's faithful minister, Sir William Cecil. It is a pity that Mary Queen of Scots, who was really a just and merciful ruler -- and, above all, a tolerant one in the very vital matter of religion -- should have ultimately been sent to the block for being faithful to her own Church and her convictions. She deserved far better. May she rest in peace.
