Excellent economical alternative to the 24-70
1 of 1 found this helpful Most of want the best, but collecting the holy trinity (14-24, 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8) is a long-term goal, at best. For those of us in this for the hobby, those might simply be outside the range of what we want to spend on a hobby. I wish I could say that I've used a 24-70 to compare, but this lens is really sharp. The focus is fast. In daylight, images aren't really distinguishable from those I would take with my 50 f/1.8. This will obviously have a disadvantage in lower light when compared to the 1.8 prime lenses, but the zoom range makes it an excellent lens for walking around. When I travel and only want to worry about securing one lens, this is the one I take with me. If you buy a quality used lens, you're almost assured to not lose money if you do decide to upgrade. This is easily the best photography purchase I've made (outside of my first DSLR, of course!).

Great Budget 70-200
Understand first that you're not buying an item with VC. For a model with built-in autofocus, this lens is pretty old. It is, however, still very sharp. One of the perks is that its minimum focus distance is about 2/3 of most 70-200s, so you can get a bit closer to your subject. It's great at the price point.
