Brilliant

This sharpener is amazing. You pay for what you get in this business so decided to pay out more to find a better product, and this "machine" is brilliant. My main advice is get at least another 2 sharpening stones, one very course and one very fine. The product comes with 2 already so make sure you don't get the same ones. Using it can be a bit tricky at first because you have to find the perfect balance between holding your chisel with enough pressure to make sure you contact the stone, but not to much that your chisel shoots forward when you've made a pass. Good idea, meh product.

Brought this so I would no longer be summoned every half an hour to re-sharpen planes etc.

Does it provide idiot proof sharpening? Yes. Is it easier than teaching 23 year olds with the manual dexterity of a jellyfish to use a whetstone? In the short term yes. Would I recommend this product? No.

It's slow, if you've got even a few thou of wear bevel you'll be stood there for 10 minutes pushing this thing back an forth, and as the contact patch grows material removal rate will slow to a halt. The provided stones are neither coarse enough to remove material at a decent rate, nor fine enough to provide a nicely honed edge. Additional stones are available, but I've already paid £10 / inch for some aluminium profile, I'm not forking out another £50 for the stones that should have been included in the kit.

Additionally it's messy, if you lubricate the guide regularly as instructed you're going to end up with a lovely cutting paste slurry of iron filings and machine oil. not helped by the magnets used to retain the sharpening stone ensuring everything grows a nice furry iron bears, including all your tools.

So in summary, idiot proof sharpening, but slow, overpriced, and intent on abrading it's aluminium gibs with iron slurry.Read full review

Sharpening made simple

Great tool but instructions could be clearer

I have sharpened two chisels and my block plane blade. The chisels had previously been sharpened using an abrasive carborundum stone with a Stanley jig. It became clear that the blade edge was not at right angles to the blade and indeed one was curved, due no doubt to wear down the centre of the stone. Other reviewers have commented that the process is slow but I think that is an unfair criticism. Even the worst blade was recovered without resorting to re grinding on the wheel and didn’t take more than five to ten minutes. Obviously once the blade has been correctly sharpened maintenance is relatively trivial.
One thing that could be improved is the instructions and labelling around the use of the tapered “stones”. Although the usage is quite simple, I found the instructions and labelling really unintuitive and resorted to watching a YouTube video!Read full review

Not a quick alternative to a regular stone for me.

Good for a quick hone, but if you want to grind our where you’ve accidentally hit a nail it’ll take a good hour or so. The sharpening stones are too small in my opinion. Plus, I got laughed at by almost everyone who witnessed me using it on site.

Not awful but not worth the price or fit for purpose if you ask me.
