Does the job quite well

I give it four stars. It works very well. The screen is large and easy to read. It is easy to upload new maps using a PC and the USB cable. The directions are very good. After a while you learn that "Stay in the left lane" may not mean that you need to be in the left lane but avoid the right lane which is exit-only.

In most places near where I live it shows traffic. Sometimes the traffic information seems to be old and the delay will be gone by the time I get there but it works pretty well.

I did not give it five stars because there are a couple things to consider which might not be true for a newer GPS.

The memory is not large enough to hold the entire US map. This can be solved cheaply by adding a microSD card - an 8G card costs as little as three dollars.

It does not find position very quickly on startup. I leave mine on whenever the car is running so it knows where it when I start the car. It will start planning a trip based on the last known location and within a minute or so it gets the GPS fix. By the time I'm out of my neighborhood it is giving me directions.

If you buy a used one make sure you get the code needed to get the lifetime maps.

Overall I'm very happy with the 1605TM. It does what it should. It isn't dependent on a cellular connection and it stays in the car so I don't have to worry about forgetting it or leaving it at home on the charger.Read full review

Bought a second unit

I want to revise my previous review of this unit.
1.) An SDHC memory card must be formatted in TomTom's proprietary formant to be recognized. This is easy: Soft reset the unit (hold down the power key for about 30 seconds), until the unit prompts you if you want to format the memory card.
2.) The UK (instead of US) model has so far not adversely affected its use here.
