A great page-turner for boys and girls
Set during WW2 in the South East of England, the story follows a group of friends who are dealing with the fear and excitement of the War - the noise and action of the bombing raids, the troops going off to war and being naturally partisan to the British side of the conflict. One day, a German bomber is shot down and they get there as the first and only finders, eager for souvenirs ahead of other groups of children. It has one of its machine guns intact. They decide to steal it and enter the war for themselves. But the authorities are on their tails....
It's a great book. It has a great atmospheric view of a period in our history (the Blitz) that children should learn about. It covers friendship, loss, conflict and growing up. I haven't read it since I was 11 and have written this off the top of my head - it really is that enduring. My 10 year old son is reading it now and cannot put it down. Buy it. Money well spent.Read full review
