(unpolished) classic
One of the first true 3D stealth games, setting the table for the likes of MGS and Splinter Cell. The Feudal Japan setting, with its Shoguns and family houses, your kills are always righteous if you go purely for the target.
You play as either stoic Rikkimaru, or small but leathal Ayane, acting upon the will of the popular Lord Ghoda, eventually going on a mission to rescue his daughter Kiku. Guards and security can be avoided most of the time, and remaining completely undetected is key to obtaining the coveted "Ninja Grand Master" ranking, which in turn unlocks addional tools to aid you on your quest.
A very challenging game for the time, you will need to stick to the shadows and rooftops to avoid the gazes of guards, and kill selectively so that the bodies are not spotted. Combat is a little clunky, as this was pre analog control for the console (rumble is supported), and the manner of input dictates which strike your character comes out with (long press = hard strike, quick press = soft swipe).
Graphically, its a turd. Bad textures, boxy characters, and a draw distance that isn't quite enough to stop you from seeing the world being built in front of you.
Audio wise, its good. The slightly funky styled themes to the levels will stick in your mind for years to come. Each sword swipe, grunt and sound effect is wonderfully cheesy, sounding just like a cheap samurai film from the 60s or 70s.
In spite of the few negatives, this remains an essential purchase for the platform, and a standout title. Read full review
