The TC Electronics Ditto looper pedal really does the basic job in 24-bit hi-fi and with True Bypass. There's 5 minutes maximum loop time, enough for most entire songs, and that 5 minutes is double buffered so you can choose to Delete the last recorded layer (by holding the footswitch down for a moment) at any time without losing your previous work.

Only a few slight issues: 1, you have to tap twice to Stop playback, which takes practice; 2, it plays a moment of the recording when you Erase (because Erase is double-tap-hold); 3, like all small footswitches, uncomfortable to operate barefoot unless you glue a wider platform onto the switch. And 4, so small and narrow it can fall over on its side if placed on a thick carpet and footswitched clumsily.
