Old but still good tech

These are frequently sold without the remote control, but it doesn't matter all functions still work without it.
High points
it has x4 longplay in stereo (74min disc will hold 296mins)
Analogue and digital recording, when using the optical fibre cable to do digital recording from CD it even separates the tracks. I know this is all possible with mp3 but not with this quality.
For me you can't beat having physical versions of audio data.
Only low is this doesn't have netMD otherwise a very nicely presented bit of equipment.

Best way to access your old Mini Disc collection.

Best choice if you are trying to salvage old MiniDisc recordings and want a simple easy to use deck. Note that it only has a phono output - there is no separate headphone jack. You will need an amplifier. In my case I connected it directly to a Zoom recorder to make digital copies.Read full review...

Sony MDS-JE480 Minidisc deck

Super bit of kit, just updated from a well-used 440. Ideal medium for storing and even editing music, excellent sound quality (digital cloning!!), don't really know why they never caught on, were a bit pricey when brand new but still a good few out there at the right price, to me an essential part of any separates system, get one and try one before its too late!Read full review...

Forget MP3 ! This old format really does record at c.d. quality.

Probably still one the last great physical formats to record on for domestic use, not as good as DAT (which is better for mastering studio use) but still such a convenient compact format.
Robust too! , the caddy system means the disc is protected - i have ruined many c.d's because they scratch so easily and the recordable ones (when they work) even more so.
Compare this with any mp3 recorder and you will hear how much those squeeze the life out of everything in the 1st minute of playback!
Auto sync, auto digital record levels, auto track numbering means this a very friendly machine that does the job well.

Simple but full featured

A basic entry level MD. It only features one digital input.
But it works well, looks good and there is a working remote.

Retro tech?

Fed up of MP3. Yes ok it's convenient, but hardly a tactile experience. MD however, has great sound reproduction and recording capabilities. This particular Sony is a great little player with MDLP functionality (squash four CDs worth of music onto one disk at the expense of a barely discernible loss of sound quality).
In a parallel universe where the MD format evolved to this day, one wonders what the hardware specs would look like.
There's a steady trickle of players on eBay but few in great condition sadly - seems the best ones are in Japan.
Be prepared though to have to change the tiny disc ejection belt that wears after 20 years of use - a few YouTube videos and careful hands is all you need.

Bang for buck

I had a JE470 prior to this which is virtually identical, the 480 has superior quality of sound in comparison. For the price, this is possibly the best bang for buck minidisc recorder available.
