Orbitsound M9

Initially I thought it was terrible! Plugged in and the sound was tinny and weak. However I soon realised the settings were off and once the treble was lessened and the bass boosted on the remote I was quite simply blown away. The bass frequencies (plenty of sub) was low and smooth, the mids were OK (a little dipped but still audible) and the highs fairly clean. Playing some music vids on YouTube really demonstrates the capability of this unit. For under £50 (what I paid) I think you'd struggle to find anything anywhere near this. The fact you can control the mix between bass and treble is a bonus so you can tailor to your own ears. Not too many audio inputs (optical audio/rca/Bluetooth) but still decent enough. Fantastic value.Read full review

Tiny unit with a big sound

The M9 crams five speakers into a box 30cm x 9.7cm x 9.7cm. There are three inputs RCA, optical and 3.5mm jack as well as Bluetooth. Linked to a TV, Samsung smart TV in my case, optical was noticeable the best quality, crisp and sharp with speech extremely clear.
There is also a wireless subwoofer which is subtle rather than booming, set to normal you can increase or decrease bass on the supplied remote. There is also an option to increase or decrease the bass, effectively a volume control, on the unit.
The bass unit comes into its own in things such as action movies which have dedicated bass tracks in cinemas - regular TV is not usually that heavy on bass so the subwoofer remains relatively benign, adding depth and colour rather than boom much of the time.
The unit was bought as a replacement for failing external speakers for a smart TV and has proved excellent for the job and, as a bonus, when used as a Bluetooth speaker for iPhone, tablet, computer and so on it is equally impressive and pairing is a piece of cake.
Remember this is an alternative to a soundbar not a home cinema system or a hi-fi system although the quality as a Bluetooth speaker is not to be sniffed at.
Two of the five speakers in the main unit fire sideways, spatial sound technology (SST), and fill a room which cleverly makes the sound appear the same wherever you are in relation to the speakers. It’s not surround sound or anything like that but means that wherever you sit you will get the same full, rounded sound.
Used as TV speakers they are excellent value for the price with little difference in clarity or balance from low volume to high volume which, incidentally, is satisfyingly well beyond anything you would need in the average living room so there is little danger of volume distortion.
The list price is 5p light of £300 which puts it at the budget to mid-range end of sound bars although refurbished units can be picked up on eBay at roughly 50-60 per cent of that. Mine was from 3monkeys.
There are better sound bars and better Bluetooth speakers but you will struggle to find anything anywhere near as good at this price, nor anything as compact. The unit is ridiculously small for the power it produces (200w) and because of the SST system does not have to be placed in the centre of the TV nor do you have to sit directly in front of the speakers.
The unit is wood - better for resonance - with a black piano gloss finish - a bamboo version is also available. The black is unobtrusive and apart from a blue LED is hardly noticeable.
As for drawbacks the main one is that there is no HDMI port, not that that is a huge deal if your TV has an optical socket.

Big little box

It's small, so it sits unobtrusively below the tv. The woofer is bigger, of course, but the efficient blue tooth connectivity means you can push it into a corner or hide it on a bookshelf. The remote is small and a bit fiddly, but most of the time you're only using the on/off/volume, so no need to look which button is which. The bright blue power light was a bit distracting, so I popped off the grill and put a piece of tape over that. Overall I'm very pleased with the unit, it sounds good and feels solid and it's size is discreet compared to some 1m long bars. Is the sound better than others on offer - I have no idea, but for me the looks/size/sound mix means that it wins hands down.Read full review

I do luv it mun

Very nice, I'm not expert but very happy with the sound. Very easy to use and pair with other devices. I would be happy to pay the retail price but the deal offered as a factory second would be hard to beat. The product was like new!!Read full review

Pleased we didn't pay RRP of £300!

For the price we paid for this we are very happy with the product. The remote is slow but does work. The bass unit needs to be quite close to the smaller box. The sound is good and very good as it does not matter where you are in the room the sound quality remains the same. Good product.Read full review
