Best Small SPEEDLIGHT Nikon made

The SB 400 is small, light and compact runs on 2 aa batteries, recycle time is virtually instant but if full power is used about 2 or 3 seconds, I use rechargeable and it seems to like them, for its size it is powerful, picture of oil lamp was only resized for web not cropped taken in a room about 30 square meters with a ceiling about 3.250 meters high, flash bounced from ceiling, EU value on flash and Nikon D850 camera were set at zero, ASA 64. Comparison of size picture taken with same camera but with an SB 800 cropped and resized. The SB 400 is a good buy even though it's now used cost is as much or nearly as much as when new, it has earned a good reputation with professionals and amateur photographers due to its simplicity of use, simply put it on any Nikon with iTTL system camera lock it on turn it on and shoot no settings in fact nothing else to do, on my D 850 it acts like a built in flash as on my other Nikon cameras. It a shame Nikon discontinued it but that's progress. I have found it does everything I want although I still carry around my bulky but again great speedlight SB 800 if I think I might need them, truth is I never have other than for when I do portrait work.Read full review

excellent small but powerful flash

Best Value Nikon Flash out there

Great flash, i have 910/900/600/700 flashes and 5 full frame and 4 crop censor Nikons, and it works on them all, only small but good out put, only downside it does not swivel , still holds value well and well built, very small footprint can easily fit in your pocket, just go and buy one you will not regret it Read full review

A great flash for indoor shots

Obviously this will not have the performance or features of a larger unit but this is very portable and quite powerful in a small area.

Best little Nikon Flash.

Best little Nikon Flash...so for cameras without a pop up flash these are fantastic...I use them as fill during weddings on my 850 and Z6. Super light so don't have to lug around my huge off Godox and Yongnou flashes. Great! Read full review

Excellent small flash

SB 400 FLASH

Excellent little flash, very small and very easy to use. However, as it has no controls whatsoever apart from an off/on switch. You need to be careful where you point it, as it can easily 'flood' a picture, like using a DSLR flash. The head can be rotated and you will soon learn how much to rotate it, and in what circumstances you need to bounce the light. My next purchase will be a diffuser for it.Read full review

Does what I want it to do.

Bought this to improve flash photos taken with my Nikon D3400 as it requires no setting up like many alternatives. Simply slide it onto the shoe, angle the flash, and the camera sorts out the rest. So simple to use and so compact. No doubt professional photographers will point out its limitations but for me it does what I want.Read full review
