Great lens with limitations

Fast AF as long as you have decent light. With the remarkable ISO ability of the D850, light is less of a concern.
Not light, but well worth the weight. Works well with a TC 1.4 - didn't try a 1.7 yet.

This is a very high quality lens that is solidly built and easy to manage and works perfectly on my D7200. Though it's much bigger than the 70-300 and has a tripod collar, it's quite easy to handhold and very responsive when photographing birds and wildlife. Great lens, works well with the TC 1.4 teleconverter, Slows auto focus a bit. It did not work well with the 1.7x converter.

Nikon's AFS / VR update to the 80 - 400mm is a winner!

With this lens Nikon finally got the 80 - 400mm right, a tremendous improvement over the original version. The VR makes this lens easily handhold able and the AFS allows this lens to keep up with nearly all follow focus situations. It's now my long lens for anything beyond my 180/2.8 which I'll never give-up. The short range is most useful, too.Read full review

Nikon 80~400mm
