One of the great performances of the 20th Century.
Cannot recommend this highly enough. Whether you are interested in Mahler, or just astonishing historic performances, this 1955 mono recording of Mitropoulos conducting the NYPO is a must have. I have never heard an orchestra come blazing out of the gates as the NYPO does in the first movement here; and they sustain the pace throughout. This is a version with the Andante/Scherzo order that seems now to have finally regained primacy as Mahler's preferred order of movements. At the time of this recording, this must have seemed like revelation, and I cannot think of another recording of this symphony in the intervening decades that digs so deep and so fiercely into the darkness and apocalyptic majesty of Mahler's 6th.
