I have never heard an orchestra come blazing out of the gates as the NYPO does in the first movement here; and they sustain the pace throughout. This is a version with the Andante/Scherzo order that seems now to have finally regained primacy as Mahler's preferred order of movements. At the time of this recording, this must have seemed like revelation, and I cannot think of another recording of this symphony in the intervening decades that digs so deep and so fiercely into the darkness and apocalyptic majesty of Mahler's 6th.
