Great pedal.

I'm a metal head, long time musician (decades). I love pedals and have a nice collection, always on the lookout for and addition. My focus is distortion / overdrives and I like ones that can shred, crush, chug, and sound good for regular rock and blues.

Not very frequent I find a pedal I like, but this is one. I played for hours the moment I got it and tweaking a bit yields the spectrum. It works good through the clean channel as a distortion pedal and dialed back to give a little oomf and tighten up the lows in the dirty channel as an overdrive.

Great for that new metal sound, old school metal, and most any rock tones.

I am able to get my Krank to sound very much like a 5150. My Randall like a monster.

I'm very happy with this pedal.

MXR EVH 5150 Overdrive Pedal

Having owned many Overdrive pedals over the years Boss, Zoom, Electro Harmonix, others From a personal level and considering it's price, this pedal didn't really grab me from the get go, tried it on several different amps and pedal configurations was left a little unwhellmed and ended up selling in on in the end . One push crunch

I used to play heavier music, but now I am older and play blues and lighter stuff.
You never can get that crunch out of your bones. With a beautiful clean amp one push you are back into a wall of marshalls all dimed out. Crunch, sustain, and feedback WOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!! its a keeper.Read full review

I HATE NOISE

What you don't hear in the demo videos is NOISE, but life is full of compromise. Low budget? No place to open up 50 or 100 watts? It does have nice tone characteristics. I have 3 different to test drive. A Blackstar Stereo 20, Marshall MG10, Carvin SX50 - It definitely adds to the built in varity of the Blackstar; okay with the Carvin; sounds like crap with the Marshall. You can not "overdrive" the amps natural overdrive. You have to run it into a realitivly clean sound. The noise gate peters out the signal on sustained notes, which can be taxing. I have a Charvel So Cal, Fender Tele Player, and a Kramer Beretta: the effect of your guitar's sound is marginal. The difference is in your amp. The Bottom Line: I say, test a floor model, through different amps at the music store. If you like it, buy one USED from SamAshDirect... But if you want THAT EVH SOUND - buy an amp... And keep shredding!Read full review

EVH 5150 Overdrive

Great Pedal and massive amounts of distortion which works great even with single coils. The Noise Gate is adjustable and it does quiet the hiss that comes with pedals like this being on. A great innovation from the master guitar innovator himself. A great value for what it does.Read full review

From light grunge to comple shredding machine.

By far one of the best distortion pedals on the market. Packed with features. I've been able to dial in any hard rock to metal sound. From super saturated to light distortion. I honestly don't really listen to Van Halen but he makes some of the best effects and amps out there.

Amazing sound!!!

Terrific sound.... the noise gate is a great feature. Every now and then I hear a note Eddie played. Makes me smile... Have all the EVH pedals and after dialing them in through the overdrive to the AMP I got the tones and moans I was looking for... rock on Van Halen!Read full review

When used correctly this pedal kicks ass! I absolutely love it.. out of my amp it has a punchy darkness that I really like. The noise gate feature is awesome and works really well also.

MXR 5150 Overdrive Absolutely Powerhouse!!!

Great high gain pedal. Yep it does Van Halen but that is not why I bought this. The EQ section is what helps you get into a lot of other tonal flavors. Classic to metal and works with the volume control on your guitar. Noise gate is a really nice addition. Seems very well made.
Great addition to my rig!

Remember

This is EVH's 5150 tone. So if that's what you want, then you will be happy if you use a nice tube amp with it.
Don't think you can just plug into some solid state thing and be amazed, and don't expect something other than the EVH tone.
The noise gate and boost work great. Great distortion pedal compared to many others in it's price range.
