A beautiful story
(Spoilers) Lost and Found tells the story of a little boy who finds a penguin at his door and tries to help him get home. The two find friendship along the way.
The overarching theme in this book is how sometimes we focus so hard on helping another person that we don't stop to ask if they wanted the help we're offering. Our little boy in the story unilaterally decides to help the penguin get home, assuming that the penguin is lost. The two become close as they plan and execute a trip to Antarctica, but by the time they arrive, the penguin is looking sad. It isn't until they part ways that the boy realizes that the penguin wasn't lost, but lonely, and the story ends with the two friends reunited. There are many lessons to learn about sacrificing for a friend, helping others, listening and understanding what another person is thinking and feeling, and correcting mistakes.
The simple artwork is nonetheless compelling, illustrating clearly the story as it unfolds. The second to last plate is an absolutely exquisite piece that conveys deep love and friendship in a clean and simple way.
Lost and Found was one of my kid's favorite books and even though they have outgrown it, it remains one of my favorites.
