This charger ticks all the right boxes!

A friend who lives on a boat is more cack-handed than the TV character Mr Bean! He seemed to be forever shorting-out and reverse connecting battery chargers. In the end I fitted "Deltron" colour-coded crocodile clip insulating boots to the repaired chargers after seeing what he was doing (He would plug the charger into a long mains lead then carry the charger to where it was needed with the nude crocodile clips clanking together and shorting out!) The insulating boots solved the shorting-out problem but did not solve the problem of reversed connections as "It was dark and I couldn't see properly!". A Chinese made smart charger, yellow in colour, was then tried but this was not acceptable as it caused radio interference from its switched-mode power converter.

The Halfords charger solves all the above problems as (1) There is no perceptible radio interference. (2) It does not hum or make a noise. (3) The clips can be shorted together or reverse connected and the charger doesn't care as it only puts out power when it senses a correct connection! The charger is certainly foolproof but I'm not sure whether its idiot proof, nevertheless it comes very close. As it is a smart charger it can be left on without boiling the batteries. Brilliant!

A severe battery charger disaster happened to the yellow charger. Mr Bean was going to help by using a 12 volt bilge pump to pump-out a boat that had a leaking shaft gland. The pump discharge hose was not very long and it was not tied-down. As soon as the pump started-up the jet reaction made the hose flail around and squirt water everywhere - including squirting a powerful jet of water over the battery charger. There was a tremendous bang as Mr Bean had destroyed yet another battery charger elevating his cack-handeness to an art form!

So far the Halfords charger is doing well so I'd definitely give it five stars for being a foolproof and jolly good charger.
