Does what it does

The openbox V8S is a good little satellite receiver for basic freeview functions. The picture quality is great, but it is seriously let down by its EPG and recording functions.

As it only has 1 tuner facility, it is like going back in time 20 years where you have to watch the channel you are recording or go out/to bed.
The satellite EPG is very basic and only contains info for the next couple of programmes (if you're lucky!), while the internet based 7 day EPG (once you find it) is completely out of sync with UK time zone and programming.

Picture quality is very good. EPG is very poor. Instruction book is difficult to understand and print is very small. Although it had a WiFi dongle supplied with it and it connected with my router ok it was pretty much useless. Generally it is a waste of moneyRead full review

A Just-the-Job FTA HD Satellite Receiver

Very simple to use particularly for time-shift recording although perversely the recorded files can't be played on the earlier V8 box that this supersedes.

Strangely the software is virtually the same as the earlier model and the handsets are the same.
It does have 2 USB connectors that can accommodate separate memory sticks for enhanced recording capacity..Not sure of the value of the installed Apps for internet access and there is little info about them in the very basic pidgin-English Instruction book.

Great value for money

Ok, there are better units available. But for the price, this offers great value for money. It wasn't a case of "plug and play" as I hoped... I had to work out a few things in the menu. But it wasn't too hard and took next to no time. The EPG is a little slow to load but for the money paid, it's a small sacrifice. Picture quality and sound quality are absolutely bang on.
