We have three of these ...same model and they continue to work after ten years.
A very nice product...the only problem is Dyson doesn't give a rats butt about older products they've sold. Try find a Charger for this on their website...They do not have it. I had to go to the Amazon UK and then had to convert the voltage to US.Read full review

Used Dyson DC16 Vacuum

The Dyson DC16 hand vacuum has been discontinued for several years and OEM parts are becoming rare except for motor pre-filters and batteries.
The vacuum has a magnetic interlock for the motor pre-filter pack and will not run without it or if it is installed incorrectly. This filter pack is a user-replaceable maintenance part and should be replaced for hygenic reasons alone on a used vacuum.
The blue foam pre-prefilter and post filter do not age well. As it ages the foam loses its structural integrity and collapses which makes it go from a filter to a blockage for air flow. The pre-prefilter for the motor like the prefilter are washable and must be rinsed out according to use rates. If the pre-prefilter does not immediately return to its original puffy width it needs to be replaced. While the vacuum will run without the blue pre-prefilter and may even perform better. the filter is needed to catch fine particulates which will will eventually coat the impeller blades causing them to touch the fan shroud, generate heat, melt, and seize the motor causing a catastrophic failure of the vacuum. The blue foam post-filter at the top of the handle only diffuses the exhaust flow so it blows more softly back on the user. An old filter will collapse and block the exhaust flow greatly slowing the famous Dyson suction power. Since the exhaust also cools the motor, blockage of this filter will eventually harm the motor. This filter is still available for an obscene price but can be removed with no harm to the vacuum if the exhaust is not too objectionable to the user.
Dyson severely challenges the 18650 lithium batteries used in the battery pack and they will loose storage power over time.. When the battery pack looses power the vacuum will detect it and shut down with a flashing red light. A bad battery may only give a few seconds of use after a full charging. The batteries cannot be repaired and must be replaced. Check the replacement battery reviews ... there are many bad suppliers of replacements. Avoid Dyson OEM batteries since Dyson has not made them for years and they will already be old.
