Good cheap product, easily breaks if dropped or mishandled in transit, but make sure you check functions on known voltage source first.

When you purchase this, check it works on a known flex lead plugged into mains before testing for hidden cables. I’ve had two new where they could locate stud work behind plaster, but no voltage sensing even though led was on! Meaning if you relied on it straight out of the box, you could drill straight through a cable buried in the wall. Important: Always check before use and every time when reusing, (whatever one you buy) good safety tip anyway. Safer, cheaper and saves embarrassment of not carrying out a simple check that takes seconds!Read full review

Better than nothing but you need to combine whatever result you get on scanning with a little scepticism unless it's a very clearly demarcated signal.

I needed to ensure I wasn't going to drill through a live electric cable (socket pretty close to where I needed to drill). Setting up is very simple, in use it gave a signal suggesting it was ok but it's definitely not an easy test as results were a bit variable, I wonder if the plasterboard was foil backed leading to my struggling. Haven't used the stud detector yet, oh and when I did drill all was good, phew!Read full review

Unreliable results

I had hoped to use this meter to detect cables and pipes behind walls before installing pictures.
Using it on several areas where I knew whether cables were present, I found that the results were random.
Possibly the meter needed calibration / sensitivity adjustment, but this required a plastic screwdriver to be broken from the unit, and the instructions were unclear about exactly how to adjust it. Anyway, you would expect it to be calibrated in the factory before despatch.
