Compact and Easy to Use

I bought this scanner to replace an older Canon CanoScan D646U which after about 15 years had worn out. Very impressed with this newer model I like the fact it's powered from the USB rather than needing an additional power supply. This also means unlike the old model the bulb only comes on when the computer is on and the scanner is in use which saves power and bulb should last longer. It's also a bit less bulky than the old model an inch or so shorter so fitted easily into the space I had with plenty of room for the USB lead.

I found the drivers and software easy and strait forward to install I didn't encounter any problems even though I'm still using Windows XP on my desktop so I was pleased about that.

Generally in operation it works similar to the older model. However it is much faster. As an artist/designer I mainly use it to scan drawings from my sketch books, and whilst I don't need a particularly fast scanner for that job its improved scanning speed also makes it practical to scan other documents such as forms in order to keep business records. The scan to PDF feature is also very useful for this, so it's much more useful than the old model.

I suppose my only criticism would be of the bundled "My Image Garden" software. This is basically a bit like Google Picasa in that it catalogues images on one's computer. However unlike Google Picasa it won't display the Canon CR2 raw images taken with my Canon DSLR. Surely one would expect image cataloguing software supplied by Canon to work with their own file formats. However this isn't a big deal since Google Picasa and other Canon software which came with my camera does this job very well and I don't really need more image cataloguing software.

But generally I have been very pleased with this new scanner it does the job very well and is a significant improvement on my old scanner.

Not bad for the price.

Its's a bit slow and the software isn't as user friendly as my last printer.I haven't used all the features as my use for the scanner is just for scanning documents. I like the option to save to PDF's as you can then edit these if you want- not a feature I had on my last Dell printer. I bought this in a hurry when my last printer failed and had a lot of docs to scan in. I'm sure for ordinary home use when you wouldnt have so many to do at one time this would be perfectly adequate for the money.Read full review

Great product at great price

Great product as you would expect from Canon.
I have tested it with a few scans of my photos, with good results.
But these are early days, and will need time to find out more about the pros v cons.
Advise to future purchasers of this product - I have USB ports on my PC tower both
on the front and back panels, but will only work when connected to the port in the back.

Excellent document scanner

I use it for scanning documents. I have used canonscan with LED technology for many years and the results are outstanding. Scanner is simple to use, with one key action buttons to simplify use. Overall product and results quality are exceptional for document scanning. I do not scan photos.Read full review

Perfectly adquate for copying personal documents like Certificate of insurance for wife etc etc

This replaced Packard Bell Scanner which was linked to my printer - the scanner unfortunately died so I had to replace it - this I did with this product - the only downside is that it does not link in directly with my printer but it is not difficult to print from it.

Was certainly pleased when this one actually worked - having had to send the first one back which was faulty.

Be aware

Would not work initially, no communication between it & laptop. Found it does not like being connected via a USB splitter/hub and had to be plugged straight into the computer.
Other than that no problems, and happy with quality of photo copying.Read full review

Lightweight, robust, clear.

Fantastic quality, picks up all the details on my artwork with minimal editing needed in any software if at all. Would recommend. HOWEVER, if you do have a little more to spend the 220 has higher DPI than this one with barely a difference in cost. Doesn't need a plug either, just a mini USB port to plug it in, software available from Canons website. Can also have a stand to stand it up on to minimize even more deskspace taken.Read full review
