First generation Nook

This is the first Nook and as such, it doesn't have all the features of the later versions. It can read e-books in EPUB and PDF format, and play MP3 files, and that's what I wanted. It delivers those just fine.

The web browser feature (in updated firmware; see below) is pretty much useless on this tiny screen. I tried it once and found it very difficult to use. In any case I didn't buy it to browse with.

Note that if you buy a used first generation (BNRV100) Nook, it may be necessary to factory reset it to clear a password. This is a bit tedious but not difficult. It's a lot of power-up, power-down, wait 15 seconds, repeat 6 times, power on, then wait while it resets. The procedure can be found on the internet.

I doubt that most users keep their firmware up to date so it's worth checking the Settings screen to see what version it has. 1.7.0 is current; 1.2.0 is what is often seen on the Nooks.

All in all, for under $20 it is a bargain. Add a 16 GB SDHC chip for $5, and it can store hundreds if not thousands of books.Read full review
