Affordable Night Vision Goggle for James Bond Citizens!

There is a humorous scene in “The Living Daylights” where 007 has to turn on the AN/PVS-5 Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) for his operations assistant, Saunders to see what’s going on below their hotel room where Korskov was to make a run to them to defect. Having extensive experience with the PVS-5s which were inadequate for the 1980 Desert One hostage rescue mission’s incompetent USMC RH-53 helicopter pilots (one rammed an USAF C-130 causing a huge fireball explosion incinerating 8 servicemen to death) and their better AN/PVS-7s, I find the lack of depth perception by having both eyes committed to the image intensifier image is a mistake. Better is ONE night vision goggle for ONE eye and the other naked even if it only sees black to preserve some depth perception. Moreover, this unaided/aided combination enables red dot collimator or glowing tritium iron sights on shoulder/hand weapons to be aimed accurately to hit targets at night aka Night Shooting Target Aiming (NSTA) or “Night Shoot”. You can go retro-Vietnam and attach the mono-goggle to your shoulder weapon alone or co-witness to your red dot sight for weapons firing but you lose image intensification for Night Maneuver Terrain Certainty (NMTC) or “Night Maneuver”. This mono-NVG approach is embodied in the current USMIL AN/PVS-14 NVG.

The AN/PVS-7 or –14s as Generation 3 NVGs cost around $7,000 each which is nothing for a narco-religionist-thug or the over-financed USMIL--but too much for the James Bond Citizen (JBC). The good news is that MI7’s Q shop has found a brilliant Generation 1+ NVG monogoggle with USMIL helmet mount combination in the $500 price range: the ARMASIGHT SPARK (no pun intended) and Helmet Mount 170 combination shown here.

Read my REVIEW of the "ACH-ARC Helmet Accessory Picatinny Rail Kit Mich Fast Ops-Core"; attach this rail to your helmet for an IR flashlight to illuminate beyond 100 meters for your SPARK NVG if ambient light is weak. Photo shown here of the OPS CORE rail on PASGT helmet with Mount 170 for the SPARK NVG.

James Bond is REAL.

Not cheap, but worth it

Great little unit. Definitely on the high end of the price scale for a Gen1, but the CORE technology definitely makes a difference in performance. I think the price difference is worth it. Has the typical limitations of Gen1 NVG - needs a source of IR illumination or you aren't going to see anything, fish eye distortion (but less severe than other Gen1s I tried) however very clear in the center of the screen, no gain/brightness control, some minor imperfections in the tube (typical of Gen1), power supply makes a faint but noticeable whining noise. On the plus side, the construction is excellent, the optics are high quality and can be focused for a very crisp image in the center of the viewing area, lots of high quality accessories that integrate with the unit, compact size, very nice carry pouch included.

All in all, if you can't afford Gen2 but need something more than a "toy," I wouldn't waste your time or money on the cheaper Gen1 NVGs and go for this one.

Perfect for the buget minded.

This works great for a low cost but useable nightvision option. Add on a LED intensifier and you have a real Gen2 like set up. Set up properly this defiantly has real world applications. I would recomend to any one with a buget in mind.Read full review

Compact, lightweight, and impressive performance

This is an impressive night vision monocular, especially for the low cost. It really comes to life when paired with an external IR illuminater and the optional 3x or 5x lens.

Good quality infared monocular

Everything is good about the infared monocular except for the mount adapters. You will have to buy a specific one from the armasight company in order to mount on to something.
