Great affordable upgradable Mac!

This was perhaps the last Mac mini that was fairly easy to do your own upgrades. I’ve maxed out the RAM to 16GB and swapped out the hard drive for a SSD. That, along with some external USB drives, and I’ve set mine up as a home file and media server. Not bad for a ~$200 purchase!Read full review

Great product

I bought this as a low power, always on personal server that could do a little light desktop work besides. The form factor is great, it takes up very little room, and if I want it could be a great little HTPC. I have had better luck using dedicated Apple hardware than with my experiments with hackintoshes, though that may change in the future.

No idea why Apple took such a step backwards when they updated this product.

Great little desktop - so much easier to use than any WIN computer

The Mac Mini is a great computer for home use for writing, photograph analysis, and general purposes. It is small, quiet, and so easy to configure, especially compared to Windows machines. And the Apple updates usually come only every few months rather than daily as with the WIN patches. Hint: update the Mini to 16gb RAM. It only costs about $80 and makes a marked improvement in operating speed. Hint 2: buy a portable HD and use it with the time machine backup utility. It is easy and works in the background. On this dual-core i5, I process 16 mpixel photograph RAW files and the speed is fine, with barely any delay as you change contrast, sharpness, etc. I have not tried a catalog like Lightroom, so I can't comment. Really, it is fun to use this computer (and I am definitely not an Apple fanboy), while WIN machines are chores or drudgery.Read full review

Perhaps the Best Mac Mini

These are among the best values in Apple's Mac Mini's. Fast enough for all but the most demanding computer work. Very easy to upgrade with memory and drives. Small footprint for any desk. Simple, clean looking, and just works.Read full review

Great value and quality

Mac mini's take up very little space for tremendous computing power depending on how you configure them. Can't be easily user modified so it is important to purchase with the correct features. Easy setup and migration from your previous computer.Read full review

For work, this was better than a new mac mini.

If you want easy memory and hard disk upgradability buy a mac mini made in 2012, and upgrade it vs buying a new one. For me it was worth losing a separate discrete graphics card and only having one, vs two thunderbolt ports, for the extra memory and disk space.

It is worth mentioning that I did upgrade the hard disk from a magnetic disk to an ssd. I did read that unlike windows machines the mac may not support a data distribution drivers called TRIM that attempt to distribute writes evenly across the memory chips that the ssd is made of for longevity purposes.

Rather than trying to get driver support for this workin at the operating system level, I bought an SSD disk from Corsair that has this feature built into it.

The perfect mix.

Size, performance and price. All come together with the 2012 Mac mini. Don't want to run a Mac, then go ahead and set it up as a wintel machine and only run Windows programs. I like Mac but do use sime Windows programs so I know first hand this machine runs those programs better than my i5 Windows machine running the same Windows 7 program. I upgraded to 16 gig of memory. Excellent move, now things are even faster. Will switch to 480 ssd drive next. I am very happy with this mini, it is doing everything I want it to do at a pace I am very happy with. Yes quad core i7 is faster, my laptop is a fast i7, but you know what the mini works perfectly using the same programs I have on the pro.Read full review

Best Mac Mini

I think the late 2012 Mac Mini is the best Mac Mini thus far. The speed of the computer is not that much slower than the 2014 version and the RAM is upgradable. I had an old late 2008 Powerbook Pro. It finally died after being I baked the logic board 8 times to keep it alive for over a year waiting for the new Mac Mini to be announce. I couldn't wait anymore. I took the SSD from the Powerbook Pro and placed in the Mac Mini and everything started up. The only hitch was that I had to turn off FileVault. But after starting it up, I just turned the FileVault back on and re-encrypted the SSD. Good value for about $400.Read full review

Budget Priced Mac

This is an excellent bargain. For $199, you get a Mac capable of running macOS Sierra (the current OS as of February, 2017). The unit comes with enough RAM and storage to meet most users needs. To run more concurrent (or memory hogging) applications concurrently, simply swap the installed RAM and bump up to 8GB. For notably faster performance, upgrade the internal hard drive to an internal SSD.Read full review
