Nexus Player

This is a very capable TV Box. It handles HD very well and is dumbed down whereas a total idiot can use it.

What makes it subordinate to the rest is the following:

1. No ethernet port (a killer), a gigabyte port would be impressive for HD Content (you can purchase an ethernet adapter which make everything work so much better but it should have came with one).
2. No USB Port
3. No On/Off button

2 & 3 I could live with however I should not have to purchase an ethernet adapter just for respectable HD viewing.

P.S. Wireless isnt' gonna cut it.

Mediocre

I had high hopes for this thing based on the stats. It's really sleek and kind of small and it just seemed like it was going to be ultra cool. Well, it's only a little cool.

First, let me say you won't be able to install any program you want. You can't put Amazon video on this thing. That's a big drawback for me.

You can't turn this thing off without just unplugging it completely.

You'll spend about an hour trying to update this thing, because it won't do it automatically. Yes, that's right. You will need to go into your settings and update about 5 times before it will finally be up-to-date. And it doesn't just let you know it's out of date. You just have to go check over and over until you're done updating.

Pros:

Once you get everything setup it does work well I suppose. There is no app to control it with Apple as far as I know (I looked), so if that is all you have for a phone or whatever, then you can't lose your controller. If you lose your controller this thing is a brick. My wife has a Droid phone right now though, and she was able to install a remote for the thing, so we are not in that boat thankfully.

There are a lot of apps to install for this thing. We watched the Super Bowl 50 on CBS thanks to this. There are apps from other countries (pretty cool because I speak German and have family there and like to keep my language skills refreshed -- TV helps).

You can put games on it. I didn't really play with that too much, but little kids like it. I have two and they were excited about that, but I am wary to let them play without my presence, because I don't want the controller to disappear. I have a 2-year old and that is a big concern.

Overall, I like the thing. I'm not sure if it was worth the 50 bucks I dropped on it, but I have a small, portable home theater system that includes a bluetooth speaker and a projector that both can run on batteries and this thing should be able to run off of them so I can go outside or travel with them and still have media with me.

It is kind of finicky..

Netfix did not work on 1 of my tv's. After factory resets, After all available updates, when Netflix played the screen went black. The time played counted up but picture was black. I was about to send it back, but I tried it on last time on different tv. It worked! So I must say "finicky". I also noticed the power plug is also "finicky". You must FIRMLY (seemed I was going to break it) push in the plug in to the device.

I was also disappointed the PAID sling box for tabs did not work. In fact NO app is available that works with the SB300. I know it is not a Asus problem, but my MINIX5 mini does work with the tab app, so Slingbox orphaned this box.

The remote is flimsy.

The Fire tv Stick is a better price performance solution even at $50 for the nexus, given it has a more solid remote. It is smaller. I have not run in to a tv where it wont play netflix.

Better than a Chromecast!

I was debating between a Chromecast and the Nexus Player. I bought this player for $40 which was $5 more than what a new Chromecast would cost me.

At first there were many updates to take care of, then I got to set it up to my liking. It performs really well. I use Netflix, YouTube, and Plex on a daily basis and I have never had a hiccup.

Very happy with the features, simplicity, and overall build quality.

The great Android TV experience on an old device from 2013; even in 2022

The Nexus Player is a great choice for those who want an older but great Android TV experience. The device performs decently while playing casual video games, and works just like it's supposed to when streaming video. It should be noted that this device doesn't have an Ethernet slot, so you're going to have to stick with a wireless connection. As long as you have a decent internet connection this device should work just fine. I got to admit that the remote feels cheap, but it uses Bluetooth instead of a IR pointer so you don't have to point the remote directly at the player. It can be updated all the way to Android 8.1.0, but I stuck with 6.0.1 for this review. To sum it up, it's a great Android TV experience on an old device from 2013; even in 2022!Read full review

Great product

I just wanted a product that I could use to watch Twitch, YouTube and Plex media content on my TV. The Nexus Player does everything plus more. I was originally using the 1st gen Fire TV Stick but haven't looked back since getting the Nexus Player. The only thing it lacks is the ability to watch Amazon Prime but that's more of Amazon's choice since they're competing with Android TV.Read full review

I like everything about it except for the lack of a standard USB port.

I use it for my HDHomeRun live TV with 1080i MPEG encoding and it handles it like a boss. I love these boxes. The lack of a standard USB port and infrared remote receiver means I have to buy accessories to go with this so I can use it with my logitech remote and ethernet.Read full review

New Nexus player

Indeed brand new and sealed. Performed an update from Android 5.0 to 8.0 which makes it run like a champ. This is my 2nd Nexus Player working in the house, thinking of getting a third one before they run out. I have original Nexus Player for about 7 years went thru the updates and is still kicking. Added mini usb adapter and expanded memory to 72GB. Read full review

Nexus top quality

This device has good performance.
The hardware performs good and operating systems works very well.
Only thing I miss is the ethernet port that would be handy for this device.
