  • Gigabyte X58-USB3 Review

There are certain things that annoyed me about this motherboard. Firstly, unlike the Gigabyte X58-UD3R, this motherboard do NOT come with an IDE connector. Okay, we all know that IDE was on its way out, but it did leave me with two perfectly working DVD-RW drives that I couldn't use anymore when I changed my motherboard to this one. (And I wasn't about to put an IDE add-in card just to use the two drives) The other thing to note about this motherboard is the BIOS is a bit of a mish-mash of weirdness. It does the job, but if you're using say a USB keyboard that has RGB LED lighting, you'll find the BIOS will flash the LED's and the input from the keyboard will also fluctuate in time with the blinking LED's. It's really quite bizarre. I guess that's what you get for using an new keyboard with an older motherboard, but it is weird! Overclocking stuff is easy enough for both the RAM and CPU, although I've never really done either (because I like my stuff), but using Profile1 you can run your RAM up to 1.6Ghz easily enough. Decent amount of SATA ports, but the Intel controller is a bit flakey and randomly drop a drive out of the array for no-reason at all, but that's the same for nearly all on-board RAID controllers. One serious downside to this motherboard is its QVL for its RAM. No doubt, being Gigabyte, there's plenty of RAM out there that it will work with that's not listed on the QVL, but the QVL list for this motherboard is BAD, so VERY BAD. If you want to stick 24GB of RAM in this motherboard, you need 4GB sticks (2 x set of 3x4GB). And the only two manufacturers on the QVL that make 4GB are Kingston and Hynix. That means you're down to a choice of just 2 from a list of about 50 or so tested RAM modules. Also, I also know that Kingston no-longer make or support their 3x4GB set of DDR3 RAM, so your lifetime warranty isn't worth the paper it's printed on. All these niggles aside, it's a good motherboard, and it does supports 24GB of RAM and does exactly what it says on the tin and you really can't ask any more than that. It's just a shame that the 24GB of RAM on the QVL is so small.
