Good Radio for the Money
I have used these Midland GMRS radios for years. They are relatively easy to operate, and they have many features. I really like the NOAA weather band and the capability to use an ear bud (for silent operation). I use them during hunting season each fall. The radio is small enough to fit in my shirt pocket. However, they seem to last only about two seasons (around 30 days of total use). When they fail, the first problem that I see is that the radio fails to transmit. It can receive fine, but cannot transmit. Even with this limitation, these Midland radios are as good or better than other similar radios. One of the best GMRS radios
This has 5 watts of power which is the maximum legally allowable. Mine came without rechargeable batteries so I use AA batteries. At maximum power it goes through those batteries fast, but at lower power it's acceptable. The range is nowhere near advertised in normal conditions but on a hike or ski hill, it's okay. It's easy to use - a good first radio. I didn't pay much for mine so for me, it was a bargain. Get what you pay for
These really came in handy for a group offroading trip. Great to keep communications up during highway driving or on the trail/beach. Considering nobody ever gets the claimed distances I'm not suprised by the lack of true distance achieved. If you need reliable comms of more than 3 miles look into spending more money. Nice features and easy to use.
These are the best radios of this type that I now own. I have a set of kenwood UBZ-LF14s and motorola talkabouts and these are by far my favorites. Not only can I adjust the power level, but there is also a scramble feature and the ability to choose between ctcss and dcs privacy codes, and for me that is a big plus. I also get excellent range with a clear signal. I know there are some who do not think too much about these radios, but if they would just take a little time to get familiar with all the great features these radios have they would agree that they are top of their class!Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

I am impressed!
My wife and I needed a reliable way to communicate when I am out hiking and after some research we decided on the Midland GXT1000VP4 Two-Way Walkie-Talkie. With its 50 Channels and 36-mile range, the Midland GXT1000VP4 has worked wonderfully in the month since it arrived. So far, we have yet to exceed this unit's range even in deep wooded areas and the 142 privacy codes keep our communications both private and without outside interference. Also, between the use of the Hands-Free Transmission via VOX (Voice-Operated Transmission), the accompanying Headset with microphone, the Whisper Function (which enables the user to transmit high-level sounds even when whispering) and the Silent Operation Mode (wherein all beeps and tones are disabled), I can observe wildlife close-up without being noticed. Nice number of channels to select from; distance is great
This little radio set is an inexpensive way to communicate. Plan to use for hunting, and mostly fishing. Initial test showed me how far it can reach out. Surprising especially on the water. great feel and lightweight
