Rock solid - will last a lifetime
As a certified Bernina technician (note: I do not work for Bernina, but a local quilt shop which carries Bernina machines), I have enjoyed servicing many of this and closely related models of Bernina sewing machines. Since my personal sewing needs are not very complicated, having 14 utility and 14 decorative stitches available is more than adequate for me. The 1080 and related models are some of the early computerized Bernina machines, giving the user very simple ways of choosing different stitches. With a mostly metal frame and proven Bernina gearing and needle system, this machine is built like a tank, and most likely will outlive anybody who buys one now.
One caveat - since it is computerized, it does have several printed circuit boards inside. If one of these dies, replacements can no longer be obtained, and the factory will no longer accept them for manual trouble shooting and replacement of individual components. If any service technician obeys common ESD prevention measures during servicing, the likelihood of damaging a circuit board is slight. However, many common internal hardware parts are still available from the factory through an authorized Bernina dealer.
After servicing several of these machines, I had to buy one for myself, and I am very happy I did.
