About this product

Product Information

Best known for his elaborately choreographed, large-scale photographs, Gregory Crewdson is one of the most exciting and important artists working today. The images that comprise Crewdson's new series, Beneath the Roses, take place in the homes, streets, and forests of unnamed small towns. The photographs portray emotionally charged moments of seemingly ordinary individuals caught in ambiguous and often disquieting circumstances. Both epic in scale and intimate in scope, these visually breathtaking photographs blur the distinctions between cinema and photography, reality and fantasy, what has happened and what is to come. Beneath the Roses features an essay by acclaimed fiction writer Russell Banks, as well as many never-before-seen photographs, including production stills, lighting charts, sketches, and architectural plans, that serve as a window into Crewdson's working process. The book is published to coincide with exhibitions in New York, London, and Los Angeles.

  • Fabulous photos presented in a wonderful book

You kind of have to know Gregory Crewdson's work to get the most from the book. The photos are staged not spontaneous, but set up in such a way that plays with the imagination. You end up asking 'what just happened here ?' and that is the fascination with almost every photo in the book. The delicious frustration is that you could be utterly and naively wrong in your interpretation because more that one answer fits. Nothing is obvious. It's wonderful. The quality cannot be beaten, it is now the nicest quality book I own. And just as well because you actually get to enjoy every picture. Not every one though. There is one, a girl stranded in a car in the middle of a junction, driver door open (remember it's USA work) and you have to imagine why she is sitting there, and what just happened ? I saw the making of it on the net and the girl passenger is shown to be so innocent, i.e. maybe some horrible guy has argued and stormed off and that seeing the finished picture again I actually cried for her in her innocence in the situation. If a book can do that to you and if you'll excuse the pun , it speaks volumes about the artist, his skills and the sheer beauty of this product. It has made me want to own everything this genius has produced. I absolutely love my new book.
