About this product

Product Information

Miss Guinevere Pettigrew, a gentlewoman spinster approaching middle-age has been working as a governess to make ends meet, but a succession of appalling employers has left her down-trodden. Then one morning, owing to a mix-up at her employment agency, she is sent for an interview with a Miss LaFosse, a glamorous but dissolute cabaret artiste, who is seeking a new maid. Despite the moral and social gulfs between them, a surprising bond is formed, and by the end of the day, both their lives have been entirely transformed.

  • A Book of its Time

The book was first published in 1938 and concentrates on the difference between a poor Miss Pettigrew and the richer, decadent high society that she finds herself in for a day. There are comments which are no longer p.c. about women and briefly about jewishness or foreigners. This has to be put into context of the time but does spoil the read. The format is good and the illustrations delightful

  • Wow!

I had never heard of this until I listened to Maureen Lipman reading an abridged version on the radio. Utterly compelling. Utterly charming. A very strong and real sense of ‘era’. Characters who are like quickly and strongly drawn pencil sketches. And a novel with a sub-24 hour timeline! And it works!! I bought copies for me and for my soon to be 15 years old niece. GORGEOUS!!

Oh WHAT a story! I found it in a holiday house bookcase, and had to have a copy for myself. Such a feel-good read. I love it!
