About this product

Product Information

A brand new revised edition of the best-selling graphic novel based on the enchanting prelude to The Lord of the Rings. First published in 1990, David Wenzel's comic book adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit was an immediate success and has become one of the best-loved graphic novels of the last 25 years. The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a quiet and contented hobbit whose life is turned upside down when he joins the wizard Gandalf and thirteen dwarves on their quest to reclaim their stolen treasure. It is a journey fraught with danger - and in the end it is Bilbo alone who must face the guardian of this treasure, the most-dreaded dragon, Smaug. Illustrated and hand painted in full colour throughout, and accompanied by the carefully abridged text of the original novel, this handsome authorised edition will introduce new generations to a magical masterpiece - and be treasured by Hobbit fans of all ages, everywhere. This new edition has been completely re-scanned from the original paintings to achieve more accurate and vibrant colours, with David Wenzel revisiting the work to provide sensitive improvements and additions to the original edition. The book includes a magnificent and completely new cover design by Wenzel himself.

  • Wonderful story

The Book looked in good condition. However, I was reading it to my Grandkids as a bedtime story and a large section of the pages became unglued. I have repaired the book and I hope to continue reading it to them.

  • A beutifully illustrated and enjoyable story

I bought this book for my grandson who is 7 years old. He liked the first "Hobbit" film. He is not yet able to read the novel on his own so when I saw this I thought it looked ideal. And so it was. I was very pleased with it when it arrived because it looked new, not a trace of wear and tear. He was a bit disappointed with the illustrations at first because they looked very old in style but then I told him that they were drawn many years ago. That said, they have a charm all their own. The main events are well covered and nicely drawn. The greatest value in the book is that we sit together and read it. The first time we read it for the story and it sparked discussions on why the story and the films are different, about why the characters are dressed differenty (except Gandalf) and much more. This is the second copy of the book that I have bought. The first copy, now well thumbed and read, was bought about 20 years ago when our eldest son was I school. He is dyslexic and had to subit an assignment on a novel. He, too, loved the story and wanted to use it. This book gave him the ability to read it easily and to complete the assignment without much adult help. It also gave him the confidence and success that he needed. He passed he assignment and his exams later. I highly recommend this book for reading with children and talking about the story and to anyone who wants to see and read the story.
