About this product

Product Information

Safari in Swahili means a journey, typically a long one. In Dark Star Safari , Theroux's itinerary is African, from Cairo to Cape Town - down the Nile, through Sudan and Ethiopia, to Kenya, Uganda and beyond to South Africa. Journeying by train, boat and cattle truck, he passes through some of the most beautiful - and often life-threatening - landscapes on earth. This is travel as discovery, but it is in part a sentimental journey. Almost 40 years ago, Theroux first travelled in Africa as a teacher in the Malawi bush. Now he stops at his old school, sees former students and revisits his African friends. Seeing first-hand what has happened in Africa in those four decades of independence, Theroux is obsessively curious and wittily observant.

  • Great book which takes you from Egypt to South Africa by trains and buses

This is a Paul Theroux book so this is not an ordinary travel book it is more a writer who travels from Egypt to South Africa by buses and trains avoiding all the tourists traps. Paul Theroux describe the landscapes, the history, the beliefs and politics of each country but the more interesting part is that he is interested in speaking to all people he meets from the taxi diver, to the street fruits seller to members of Embassies in fact to anybody ready to reply to his questions about their lives and the countries they live in. This is where his books take another dimension and become real reportages on the human conditions in such countries. Paul Theroux has his opinions and you can agree or disagree with him but he is also quite angry to see the sorry state of these Africans countries stuck in an endless circle of poverty, corruption and neglect. If you want to travel in the real world Paul Theroux books are highly recommended.
