  • Immersive historical fiction

I originally saw this film in theater when it first came out and remember liking it. Seeing it available in a Criterion version had me curious since it had been decades since I last saw it (although I may have rented it on Vhs). Having seen so many Kurosawa flims on blu ray, what stood out was the use of color. Since I first saw it, I have become a history buff and the film become a really interesting representation of something that actually occurred in history but with a fascinating speculative story that was a method of representing issues of class, ambition and the social envrionment that existed during this feudal period of Japan. One scene that stood out to me showed how technology (use of firearms) impacted events. This film stood out for me as being an immersive historical fiction.

  • Kagemusha-The Shadow Warrior.

I have been a longtime fan of the work of Akira Kurosawa. Kagemusha is a high point in his career. A masterwork. Surprisingly, he had trouble financing the film. Truly, the prophet is not recognized in his own country. Luckily Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were also fans. They stepped in and we have a great film.

  • Riveting. Kurosawa at his best.

Get it. It's an almost perfect movie, and the commentary is insightful. I almost never watch the extra "goodies" because their mostly uninteresting crap, but all the Criterion commentaries and other materials are superb.

  • Epic Just Got Better

It starts as a boring movie, but it does pick up the pace with sword play and action fight scenes. Kagemusha is just as good as today's epic titles.

  • Kurosawa classic.

The video is not as sharp as one would expect from Criterion but the film itself was still tremendous.

  • A jewel of a movie

The film was well made, with fine acting, good cinematography and the direction was superb, as expected of a Kurosawa-directed film.
