    UniFi Security Gateware 3P

I got this to replace my failing firewall gateway. On the plus side it is not expensive, small, and fan less. But the controller software to manage and set the configuration and firewall rules is outside of this box. You will need pc windows or linux or their cloud key device to run the controller software. you don't need to have it running all the time, unless you want the stats or route the alerts somewhere. And it really need a switch behind it because it has only 1 wan port, a lan1 port, and lan2 port (3 networks). The advantage to the centralized controller software is that it can control all the devices in the unifi family: router gateways, switches, wifi access-points, video monitoring, ...

Not What I Thought it Was

I purchased the USG with the intention of taking full advantage of my bandwidth. I own a Meraki MX 64 which limited my bandwidth due to the max throughput. The USG is configured through app on PC or through cloud key which is fine, but there are a lot of areas that are still in testing which concerns me about future stability on a security device. I would have also preferred switching at least be an optional item giving the multiple lan/wan ports. Ubiquity makes good products, but this one missed the mark IMO.

  • Nice, but hard setup

I wanted a firewall/router/VPN for my home. Already have several Unifi products so it would work great together. Setup was not a breeze just let you know. Knew that before I got. Once it setup it works great. But there is a catch. When the firewall is fully deployed. My broadband speed would drop. My broadband connection is 400 down and 20 up. With the intrusion detection enabled. My speed dropped to 100 down and 20 up. Couldn't figure that out. It seem that the system isn't designed to handle all that bandwidth processing. So had to turn it off. Not a huge deal for home use. But would have loved it to keep my full broadband speed. Other then that it's a pretty great product. One other note. It gets hot. I had it on top of my switch. My switch was getting hot. So I had to place spacers to keep better airflow. Other then that all good

  • Unifi USG

Great little device. Replaced a Ubiquiti X router. Very similar capabilities; I just wanted the full system reporting capabilities within the Unifi controller software. This USG works great for that. Only minus (same as the Edger outer X) is that you can't do all the super security stuff and still maintain gigabit speeds. This takes a much higher-horsepower device. No biggie on a small home network, but I would not recommend for a larger, enterprise-type situation, with more users and critical security needs.

  • UniFi Security Gateway is not for noobs

Once configured and going, the USG works fine. It was not an easy or intuitive process to get the USG installed. UBNT has a document "How to adopt a USG into an existing network" that must be followed exactly, and I do mean exactly. The first time I did not follow it exactly and DHCP did not work correctly and no amount of configuration changed its behavior. I 'forgot' the device in the UBNT Controller which resets the USG to factory defaults, then follow the document exactly. Now the USG runs fine and provides much network information. Yes, I would buy the USG again but as I stated in my title: the USG is not for noobs.

  • Lightweight and powerful

The device is compact, clean and fanless operation once deployed on your network. It has a data ports of (3) 10/100/1000 Ethernet Ports and what makes it more cool is that it can accept 2 ISP's for your network setup. It comes with a good firewall performance to your network and securing your communications. If you are looking for a security gateway for your network, this device never goes wrong.

  • Solid little router.

Love the USG it pairs well with my switch and APs. Having all under a single pane of glass is very nice. It was easy to upgrade and easy to configure. I've only had it about 2 weeks but it has been solid as a rock and stable as ever in this period of time.

  • Very concise and stable with great features to handle any home network.

It is a very secure gateway but needs some expert guidance to configure and bypass the existing ISP modem. There are enough instructions and videos available to properly configure make it work. It is stable and more than enough to manage a typical home network with multiple VLANs and decent control. If you are a Network geek and want to go above and beyond with VPNs and what not, then you might want to check all its limitations before purchase.

  • If little more configuration work but a great device

A great piece of hardware with a build date of 2016. Still current V3 hardware. It was a little tricky getting the hardware updated because the firmware was older than the Unifi controller software would work with. I had to put it on the network and enter the upgrade commands in the CLI. After adoptiona and configuration I was able to replace my Verizon router with this USB. I have a lot more information and control of my network now.
