HARROWING ACCOUNT OF A SURVIVOR
After reading the memoirs of Masuda in "Autobiography of a Geisha" it is hard to know which of her experiences was the most dreadful to endure, being sold into indenture (slavery) and abandoned by her family at the age of six, the physical and mental abuse, the starvation and dreadfully cold climate, the sexual degradation and her subsequent attempts at suicide. The astonishing thing is that despite Masuda being barely able to read or write, that never the less she attempts to record her life memoirs and seeks to enlighten and educate the world in a frank and honest way, about a part of Japanese life that for eons has been shrouded and obscured by mystique and secrecy. This is the the unvarnished account of a survivor. Her account both moved and disturbed me, but I am glad to be better informed and have the highest respect for a person who would bare their soul in this way. Masuda I salute you. Jacquie Athersmith
