About this product

Product Information

This semi-autobiographical classic, written by the beloved Judith Kerr, tells the story of a Jewish family escaping Germany in the days before the Second World War. This beautiful new edition celebrates the fifty year anniversary of an adventure that Michael Morpurgo called The most life-enhancing book you could ever wish to read. Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in it any longer, and you found, to your surprise, that your own father was one of those people. This is what happened to Anna in 1933. Anna is too busy with her schoolwork and tobogganing to listen to the talk of Hitler. But one day she and her brother Max are rushed out of Germany in alarming secrecy, away from everything they know. Their father is wanted by the Nazis. This is the start of a huge adventure, sometimes frightening, very often funny and always exciting. Judith Kerr wrote When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit fifty years ago, based on her own journey, so that her own children would know where she came from and the lengths to which her parents went to keep her and her brother safe. It has gone on to become a beloved classic that is required reading for many children all over the world and is an unforgettable introduction to the real-life impact of the Second World War. This new paperback edition celebrates fifty years of this extraordinary story.

    Great read

A perfect introduction to World War Two. My 9 year old daughter and I read this together, so that I could answer any questions she had along the way. I would recommend this for younger readers. Secondary school readers would cope reading alone. A very sensitively written book, and despite the subject matter, quite uplifting.

  • Most critical review

The title is terrific. It makes one long to read the explanation for it.

I realize that this story was written for children from 9 years old. However, I read in one or more reviews that it can also be read by adults. I disagree. I found the factual content of the narrative interesting but the style of delivery is rather "flat" and not at all gripping. It is hardly compelling reading, in my opinion, but then I am a jaded 66-year-old woman. Possibly I would have found this narrative considerably more enthralling if I were 9 years old. The title is terrific though. It makes one LONG to read the explanation for the statement "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit".

  • Interesting and moving story of Judith Kerr’s childhood.

I enjoyed reading about Mog and the Tiger to my children. I did not know about Judith Kerr’s life until I read her obituary recently . This is about her childhood and starts in Germany in the 1930s. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next two in the series.

  • Omg!

I ordered this book ready to go on holiday so I wasn’t bored on the plane. It was due to come just in time for me going away with a delivery of only 3 days. This however came the next day. I was fully entertained during my flight. I read it as a child and it was lovely to relive that time. I enjoyed it just as much this time as when I was a child and it’s an amazing book. This means a lot as i don’t read much. By far the best book I’ve ever read.
