O'Brian's portrayal of each of these is faultless and the sense of period throughout is acute. Napoleon Bonaparte is the biggest threat to peace yet seen. 'In Aubrey and Maturin, Patrick O'Brian has created two of the most enjoyable characters in twentieth-century fiction.

About this product

Product Information

Set sail for the read of your life ... Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin tales are widely acknowledged to be the greatest series of historical novels ever written. Master and Commander is the first of Patrick O'Brian's now famous Aubrey/Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written. It establishes the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, who becomes his secretive ship's surgeon and an intelligence agent. It contains all the action and excitement which could possibly be hoped for in a historical novel, but it also displays the qualities which have put O'Brian far ahead of any of his competitors: his depiction of the detail of life aboard a Nelsonic man-of-war, of weapons, food, conversation and ambience, of the landscape and of the sea. O'Brian's portrayal of each of these is faultless and the sense of period throughout is acute. His power of characterisation is above all masterly. This brilliant historical novel marked the debut of a writer who grew into one of our greatest novelists ever, the author of what Alan Judd, writing in the Sunday Times, has described as 'the most significant extended story since Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time'.

  • Master and Commander - The first of over 20 novels in the series, everyone is a winner

When I embarked on the mammoth task to read the entire series at the beginning of Covid I never imagined how much joy I would derive from each and every novel. Patrick O’Brian is surely the most outstandingly talented historical naval writer of his time and leads us through the Napoleonic wars - he guides us through adventures at sea and land with the two main characters Captain Jack Aubrey RN and his Particular friend the ships surgeon Dr Stephen Maturin. I simply cannot get enough of these books and in fact I have also downloaded them all as audible books so that I may enjoy then once again whilst out walking my dog, they are simply marvellous in every Journey, description and naval detail, you will learn everything there is to know about ships, life at Sea and battles fought and lost over 200 years ago. Outstanding.

  • A seafaring tale based on real naval history.

To be honest, I had never heard of this author, but my sister recommended this book so I bought it. I found it fascinating, gripping, a real page turner. Whether you are interested in nautical history or not, you will enjoy this story and it's brilliantly portrayed characters. Strongly recommended.

  • An action-packed Naval tale

Fantastic book. The first of 23 books in the series, which follows the life of a young Naval Officer in charge of his first ship, through his entire career, to his eventual promotion to Admiral. Set during the Napoleonic war the series is fast-paced and full of action. I thoroughly recommend this book, as well as the entire series.
