About this product

Product Information

Pete McCarthy's tale of his hilarious trip around Ireland has gained thousands of fans all over the world. Pete was born in Warrington to an Irish mother and an English father and spent happy summer holidays in Cork. Years later, reflecting on the many places he has visited as a travel broadcaster, Pete admits that he feels more at home in Ireland than anywhere. To find out whether this is due to rose-coloured spectacles or to a deeper tie with the country of his ancestors, Pete sets off on a trip around Ireland and discovers that it has changed in surprising ways. Firstly obeying the rule 'never pass a pub with your name on it', he encounters McCarthy's bars up and down the land, and meets English hippies, German musicians, married priests and many others. A funny, affectionate look at one of the most popular countries in the world.

  • comedy Irish travel guide

Pete McCarthy's attempt to discover what it is to be Irish leads on an exploration of the west coast that will leave your sides aching and tears tripping down your face. Along the way he revisits his own history with the country but it's his insight into the "Irish" and our way of life that leaves you laughing out loud like a nutter on public transport. If you ever plan on coming to Ireland I would suggest picking this up and using it as your guide to the coast, if nothing else you'll have a rough idea of the cost of Singapore noodles. If you're not planning on visiting Ireland it's a hilarious read and remember two of Mr McCarthy's rules to travel, Never walk past a bar with your name above the door and on visiting any country always bring a travel guide that's at least a hundred years out of date.

  • If you ever thought that you where really Irish........

I'm only about a third of the way into this book but feel a compulsion to review it anyway..... Ive got Irish roots (father) so probably have a bit more of an insight into what Peter McCarthy is about. Its a naturally written, totally engaging read. If you have visited Ireland at all then you will see everything he describe in vivid detail in your minds eye. If you haven't, then read the book and use it as a replacement for a tourist guide. I only wish that I'd read it years ago when a friend recommended it..... so that I would be re-reading it now.

  • Great humorous read😂

This is the 3rd copy I’ve bought having loaned the first two out never to be seen again. Being Anglo-Irish/Scots myself I recognise so many of the characters PM writes about with great humour and share his passion for my mothers birthplace.
