  • A greatly abridged version of the classic story suitable for 7-9 year olds

I read this book with my primary-school aged children and they enjoyed it. I hope they shall read it themselves soon. The pictures are good and the pace of the story suits the attention span of those with primary school ability. Quite a lot of the plot and about half the characters are omitted (such as the Monk's plan to kill Oliver to take his inheritance). Some story lines are changed: Bill Sikes shoots Nancy rather than beating her to death for example, but the story was harrowing enough. Of course the book is a small fraction of the Dickens original and doesn't have the beauty of language, but it gives awareness of the plot and introduces younger children to the topics of class, wealth, crime etc.
