About this product

Product Information

Robert Mason's devastating bird's eye-view of the Vietnam war in all its horror 'I read this as a young pilot about to embark on a career flying military helicopters. It should have put me off for life. Robert Mason tells a gripping account of the relentless courage and heroism amidst the insanity of the Vietnam war. The final few pages are the most shocking I have read in any book.' Tim Peake________A stunning book about the right stuff in the wrong war.As a child, Robert Mason dreamed of levitating. As a young man, he dreamed of flying helicopters - and the U.S. Army gave him his chance. They sent him to Vietnam where, between August 1965 and July 1966, he flew more than 1,000 assault missions. In Chickenhawk, Robert Mason gives us a devastating bird's eye-view of that war in all its horror. He experiences the accelerating terror, the increasingly desperate courage of a man 'acting out the role of a hero long after he realises that the conduct of the war is insane,' says the New York Times.'And we can't stop ourselves from identifying with it.'CHICKENHAWK contains the most vivid, astoundingly intense descriptions of flying ever written. It is a devastating account of men at war, of courage and cowardice, boredom and exhilaration, lasting friendship and sudden death. It is not a book for weak stomachs, but its powerful message will stay in the memory long after the last page is turned.

  • One of those books that you feel like you were actually there.

I don't usually read the same book twice but this one I read many years ago and it haunted me and made an impression especially as I am also a pilot. One of those reads you cannot put down. The true recollections of a Vietnam War helicopter pilot. It would make a great film !..You heard it here first !

  • Fascinating but very disturbing

A very good book about the Vietnam War. As it says inside, not one for weak stomachs - possibly the most disturbing book I have ever read in some places, but if you can face that I would definitely recommend it.

  • Should've been a film

Easily my favourite military book but possibly has enough to interest any reader. The horrors of the Vietnam conflict are nothing new, but this is a gripping story with some hilarious anecdotes amongst the intensity of and violence of the first truly helicopter war.

  • Chickenhawk

So good I bought it twice. Lost the first one and after endlessly looking for it decided on the cheaper soft back version. As an ex Naval helicopter engineer it is a compelling read with regard to Roberts experiences on how he flew and things that happened to his aircraft. Aircrew will be intrigued no doubt when the read what went on of life in Happy Valley. Awesome a must read.

  • All paper with great selection of words.

Its a book. Its got lots of words in it, in a particular order so it reads well. Its made of paper, with outside covers. It behaves like a book and does all the things one expects a book to do. (Why are you asking me this question?)
