Product Information
The set includes 517 works by 130 authors. Nearly all works are printed in full. Works were selected because of contemporary significance, re-readability in the sense that great books are inexhaustible, and universal relevance in dealing with problems of thought and action that confront human beings in every age. The second edition has added works by Calvin, Erasmus, Moliere, Racine, Voltaire, Diderot, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Balzac, Austen, George Eliot, Dickens, Mark Twain and Ibsen, together with 45 authors from the first part of the 20th century. The 20th century authors include: in philosophy and religion - Russell, Wittgenstein and Barth; in physical science - Planck, Whitehead, Einstein, Heisenberg and Waddington; in social science - Tawney, Keynes, Frazer and Levi-Strauss; and in literature - Shaw, Conrad, Mann, Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, T.S. Eliot, Orwell and Beckett. The Syntopicon, a two-volume index to the ideas in the Great Books, gives 88,400 references.
