  • Great story, awkward translation.

The book was in v. good condition and good value. It's also a great story. The problem we have is with the translation. I bought it for someone who enjoyed the films and knows the area well but whose French is a bit rusty. The translation seems awkward and a bit affected with regard to description. It's better with conversation. I wish I had realised that it was translated for the American market. We'll be replacing it with the French original and a dictionary.

  • The best books have read in months. Literature of a standard rarely seen these days.

I have watched the films of both books and they are portrayed exactly as in the books. The translation from the French is a first class piece of literature; most enjoyable. It makes one want to visit Bouches du Rhone where the action takes place...

  • Something Different

This is a ‘book group’ choice by one of our members. It is not a style of book I would normally choose. However I am intrigued by its style and even though it is slow, I am surprised at how much I have enjoyed it. I have just finished part 1, and suspect there will bea twist in part 2. All in all something different for me, which is the point of a reading group.
