About this product

Product Information

Osprey's Campaign title for the battle of Tel El-Kebir of 1882. In 1881, the Egyptian army mutinied against the Khedive of Egypt and forced him to appoint Said Ahmed Arabi as Minister of War. In March 1882, Arabi was made a Pasha and from this time on acted as a dictator. Arabi demanded that the foreigners be driven out of Egypt and called for the massacre of Christians. This prompted an armed British response, first in the form of a naval bombardment of Alexandria, and then as an expeditionary force under Lieutenant-General Wolseley. This book explores the entire campaign, including Sir Wolseley's 'textbook' operation that was planned and executed with masterly competence.

  • Great Value History Book on an Interesting Character.

This book is great value for money at less than half the original price and the copy I got was really like new. The content is well written and although I haven't finished it yet I can recommend it as not only a good read but an informative work of history on a period not that well known apart from the film 'Zulu' and that didn't deal in any way with Garnet Wolseley the book's subject. Readers might not be aware that Sir Garnet who rose to be C in C of the British army was the older brother of the founder of the Wolseley Sheep Shearing business that became the Wolseley Motor Car Co.so in a nebulous way this book could be interesting to old car fans as well as history buffs.
