About this product

Product Information

Growing up in California, Dennis Severs fell in love with the England he saw in old black and white movies. At seventeen he came here, drifting, looking for a home with a heart. In 1979 he found one, a run-down silk-weavers house in Spitalfields, and over the next thirty years transformed it into a magical time capsule, transporting us back to the eighteenth-century. He wanted his visitors to feel they were stepping through the frame of time, entering an old master painting. From basement to attic, its rooms are filled with original objects and furniture found in local markets, lit by candles and chandeliers. And more than that, Dennis invented a family to live in it, the Jervis family, Huguenot silk-weavers who arrived from Nantes in 1725. Sounds and scents bring their world to life, always just out of sight - floorboards creak, fires crackle, a kettle hisses on the hob, a wig hangs on the back of a chair. As you move from room to room, you follow their story, through the days of the Georges and the Regency era to the harsher Victorian times - and at the top of the house, as befits a great story-teller is a room which might be lived in by Scrooge himself.

  • Interesting subject matter but not the style of prose

As the review title says, I was always fascinated to read about this house and the concept behind its creation - but I found the style and context of the authors prose bewildering and off putting a little
