  • The grandfather you never had telling stories of a life that no longer exists. Captivating.

Most of us know nothing about the countryside, its history, or the people who work in it. Jack knew a great deal, and is an excellent story teller. Rather than being an encyclopaedia, the biography dips into different aspects of rural life, from fishing and poaching, to ploughing and harvesting. He is the genial old grandfather that most of us wished for but never had. Leaves you with a warm and comfortable feeling of empathy and respect for country folk in equal measure.

  • A reminder that change and progress are not always the same thing.

The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there. I believe that's how the quote goes? Virtually every page informs and educates but Jack tells it like no teacher or lecturer you are likely to meet. Jack's words are few but he manges to say a lot. He talks to you not at you, and dares to have an opinion. You either understand where he's coming from or you don't? If it's the latter it really is your loss. Cheerio.
