Warriors in aprons and uniforms in homes without walls or roof.
An extraordinary novel, of an extraordinary size, depth and breadth of a Russian family in the war of 1941-45 between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Everything you might expect from this account of that war but with a depth and both clarity and bewilderment at the same time. A Russian Novel. Worth the effort but quite some effort.

Heavy reading - literally, its nearly 900 pages long ! Set in the most turbulent, violent era of a violent century . Mostly short chapters - a big plus for me in a book this long . Captures the mundanity, terror and heartbreaking tragedy of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War and Stalin's terror . A rom com it is not ....
