About this product

Product Information

The Catcher in the Rye is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth, but it's relevant to all ages. The story is told by Holden Caulfield, a seventeen- year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Throughout, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society, and the 'phonies' themselves- the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.Lazy in style, full of slang and swear words, it's a novel whose interest and appeal comes from its observations rather than its plot intrigues (in conventional terms, there is hardly any plot at all). Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation, it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you.

Great value & excellent quality. Highly recommend

I've always wanted to read this book, as I'd heard so much about it, being British, it gives a compelling background of teenage angst in the US. Well priced & Original text adds authenticity, imaging the accent, I felt that I was there.

  • Most critical review

    Not worth decades of Hype

I read it because it was recommended to me very strongly some decades ago. I could not relate to the characters (especially the rebellious & mentally/emotionally disturbed narrator) in a United States boarding school near New York as little in it was within my experience. It became apparent fairly early on where the narrative (and the narrator) would end up and I felt I had previously come across some of the elements of the plot - although it could be that the films/books concerned could have been inspired by Salinger's work.

  • As expected

Cheap second hand book, obviously well used and mildly stained, but as advertised. Good value for money.

  • YESSS

I had heard a lot about this book "you either relate to Holden and love it or think he's arrogant and hate it" was what I saw every where. Like Holden, I see myself as a realist but it's often viewed as being a moody, pessimistic teen. THIS BOOK IS THE ONLY BOOK THAT I HAVE READ WITHOUT AN ACTUAL PLOT THAT HAS BEEN ENJOYABLE. WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND

  • Falsely advertised

The description says it is in “very good” condition but it looked old and the pages were highlighted and annotated. It is still readable but the writing is unattractive and leaks through the pages.

Very interesting read. Should have read it years ago !

  • The ONLY book you need.

Whilst there are a plethora of ‘classic’ pieces of literature this will forever stand out as a perfect metaphor for teenage angst and analogy of perfect rebellion against authority. Up there with Kerouac, Hemingway and Plath. In my opinion!

  • So what

Another waste of 4hours reading a ‘classic’ . Spoiler alert ; posh entitled boy feels sorry for himself and leaves another expensive school .
